Day 1: Arrive Phnom Penh      L, D

Killing-Field-PNHUpon your arrival in Phnom Penh you will be picked up from the airport and your guide will bring you to your hotel where you will receive a full briefing of your adventure trip. After your check in we will fit the bikes and make adjustments where necessary before we enjoy lunch. Our lunch at a local charity restaurant will help local street children to develop their hospitality skills and become eventually hospitality experts.

We’ll finish up lunch and depart for our introduction ride in Cambodia. Cycling through Phnom Penh’s traffic is an adventure by itself. First we head to Phnom Penh’s Toul Sleng museum. This is the place where the horrific past of Cambodia is displayed. Toul Sleng, or better known as S21 interrogation jail, will teach you about the Pol Pot regime and how the Cambodians have recovered from this terrible period.

The past will be even better understood after we head out of town for 15km towards the Killing Fields. This place is set in-between lush rice fields and serene countryside. It is hard to understand how something that terrible happened in a place that serene. While cycling through the countryside to this place you will appreciate the Cambodian smiles and see that Cambodia has come a long way in just a few years time.

We ride back to our hotel and freshen ourselves up for one of Cambodia’s most atmospheric restaurants, Sugar palm. After dinner we transfer you back to your hotel where you will prepare yourself with a good night sleep for the next challenging days.

Cycling distance:35km

Day 2: Phnom Penh - Kampong Thom      B, L, D

Tarantula-SkunAfter breakfast we cycle towards Oudong, Cambodia’s former capital. The road up here follows pretty countryside and several snack breaks can be enjoyed in the countryside and at local Pagoda’s.  The first 40km to Oudong is over quiet inland roads passing many local villages and friendly people.

When we arrive in Oudong we will enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the many establishments at the foot of Oudong Hill. On the top of this hill several Pagoda’s and stupas resurrect high above the plains below providing excellent views over Cambodia’s rural landscape. This used to be the place where former kings were crowned and where they are now burried.

After our lunch we will set off for a last quiet stretch of road towards Skuon. Skuon is known as Spiderville and the infamous fried Tarantula can be enjoyed here. From Skuon we transfer the last 90km to Kampong Thom. Kampong Thom is the capital of the province with the same name. Here we check into our hotel and freshen ourselves up and prepare for dinner.

Overnight: Kampong Thom Village

Cycling distance:89km

Day 3: Kampong Thom - Tbeng Meanchey      B, L, D

Kampong-SvayLeaving early for a big ride to T’Beng Meanchey is necessary. We enjoy our breakfast at the hotel and cycle 28km out of town into rural Cambodia. The roads are all unpaved but hardened sand and easy to ride. The ride takes us through many local villages and we stop to explore the temple site of Sambor Prei Kuk around which we enjoy an 8km bike ride.

This temple site was constructed in the 7th century and functioned as the capital of the Chenla Empire. It is one of the oldest temple sites in Cambodia and gives you an excellent impression of the total construction of Angkor Wat later on. The temples are covered with vegetation and we explore the main temples in this complex. After our exploration we continue with a transfer of 50km to Phnom Deik. Here we unload the bikes once more and start our final 65km ride towards the provincial capital of Preah Vihear province, T'Beng Meanchey. This dusty and forgotten town has some nice little features. Its main attraction is the scenery around it. Before we enter T'Beng Meanchey we will enjoy some stunning scenery of the area.

We will enjoy a local dinner at one of the local restaurants in T'Beng Meanchey.

Cycling distance:101km

Day 4: Tbeng Meanchey - Preah Vihea      B, L, D

Preah-Vihea-templeAfter a breakfast enjoyed at a local restaurant we will depart for one of the most breathtaking adventures in Cambodia; Preah Vihear Temple.

If you thought you cycled through no-man’s land yesterday, today you will meet even less people, even more beautiful birds and endless kms of flat dirt roads on which almost no traffic can be seen. The dramatic scenery you pass makes you sometimes wonder if you’re not cycling through a fiction-like landscape that comes straight of a wonderful fairytale.

We will stop several times for a rest and a picnic before we arrive at Preah Vihear village. Here we will pay our entrance fees and arrange our transport up the hill. This is where another adventure begins. The 20 min drive to the top has to be done by 4x4 drive or special cooled motorbikes. Several sections of the road go as far as a 35% climb.

Once on top you will have a magnificent view over the plains below and because the temple is situated on the border with Thailand, you can uniquely enjoy views over two countries. The temple itself dates back to as early as the 8th century but was fully constructed in the 12th century. This exploration will happen in the late afternoon and a dramatic sunset is guaranteed!

Our ground staff will set up your campsite on top of the hill within the temple grounds and prepare a well deserved meal for you. After dinner we have the opportunity to enjoy drinks and share stories.

Overnight:Campsite at Preah Vihear

Cycling distance:113km

Day 5: Preah Vihea - Koh Ker Temple Site      B, L, D

Koh-KerToday we get up early to see the magnificent spectacle: sunrise over Cambodia and Thailand. You will witness something that only few people have witnessed before and that is what makes this experience ultimate.

After this spectacle we descend the mountain for a local breakfast in the village. After breakfast we transfer to Kulen village and ride the last 32km towards Koh Ker temple site. Koh Ker is a 10th century former capital of the Khmer empire and was only used as a capital between 928 AD and 944 AD. The temples that remain nowadays are completely covered in vegetation and are dramatic sights to behold.

Its pyramid temple offers stunning views over the plains below and is one of its kind. We cycle around the area and explore the major attractions. Our lunch will be served locally before we arrive at our basic guesthouse for the night.

Cycling distance:50km

Day 6: Koh Ker Temple Site - Beng Mealea      B, L, D

Beng-Mealea CambodiaRise and shine for a local breakfast. Today is a relaxing day with not too many kms and plenty of countryside to appreciate with plenty of friendly locals and different kinds of road transportation to admire. The empty and flat roads make up for some marvelous scenery of the Kulen Mountains that rise up from the plains. The whole experience makes you feel like you stepped back in time as oxcarts and farmers will pass you by and look at you curiously.

Beng Mealea is a relatively unexplored temple tucked away deep in the jungle. It’s a huge complex that can be truly explored as most of the temple is covered in jungle and the crowds are nowhere to be seen. It’s a real treat for anyone who loves nature, religion and history. Constructed in the same timeframe as the Angkor period, this temple was on the ancient Angkor route connecting Koh Ker to Angkor Wat.

On our way we lunch and relax in the countryside and in doing so we naturally attract the young crowd of each village. They will curiously gather around and try their English skills with many “Hello Mr.” callings.

After our exploration of Beng Mealea we continue to Svay Leu Pagoda located 10km away from Beng Mealea. Here our camp is set up once more and after you freshened yourself up we will present you with another delicious community prepared meal.

You will be surrounded by monks who live on these religious grounds. They are never too shy to strike up a conversation to practice their English.

Overnight:Campsite at Svay Leu Pagoda

Cycling distance:70km

Day 7: Beng Mealea - Banteay Srei      B, L, D

Banteay-Srei CambodiaWe leave the last camping spot on this tour in the morning after enjoying a local breakfast. Our destination is Siem Reap and into civilization. This you can notice as you will now cycle tarmac roads again. However, these roads are still inland roads and pass by pretty countryside before you enter the Angkor complex.

On our way to Siem Reap we enter the Angkor Complex on the back site and visit the small but significant temple of Banteay Srei. Banteay Srei remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia and offers stunning bass relief and other stone carvings. The temple is of huge significance in understanding the Angkorian Era. We continue to Siem Reap via Banteay Samre Temple, a miniature Angkor Wat, which is relatively unexplored. As we pass by the many temples on our way to Siem Reap you will get a good preview of what exploration lies ahead of you. After we reach Siem Reap we will check in and fresh ourselves up in a well presented hotel room before we set out for a celebratory dinner at one of Siem Reap’s most sophisticated theatres and enjoy a marvelous dinner and traditional Khmer ballet show.

Overnight in Siem Reap

Cycling distance:75km

Day 8: Siem Reap - Angkor Thom      B, L, D

Angkor-Thom CambodiaWe ride to the Angkor Temple complex before starting the Small Circuit which includes Angkor Thom, the South Gate, the Bayon, Baphoun, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King. All these temples are highlights of the complex and are must see destinations. Your English speaking guide knows all about these temples and can tell you about its history and significance. We follow the Grand Circuit to Preah Kahn and explore this magnificent temple before heading to Sras Srang where we will enjoy lunch.

After lunch we continue to cycle to Banteay Kdei, which is around the corner and Ta Prohm. Both temples are very large and appealing with Ta Prohm regarded to as the most beautiful one. We finally arrive at the highlight of your trip; Angkor Wat. In the late afternoon this temple looks at its most charming. Catch the last rays of light for the day before you return to Siem Reap. Return to your hotel and transfer to an atmospheric place for dinner.
